The great thing about our thinking patterns is that we have the ability to change them! You don't have to think of exercise as a struggle or dread it forever. You can change the way you think about it with some strategies - and you might just find yourself looking forward to it and *gasp* actually enjoying it!
Stop focusing on just weight
A constant focus on weight loss makes this journey a struggle - it will never happen as fast as you want it too and it will always overwhelm you.
Stop having your focus just on weight loss - focus instead on healthy. Start to change the thought pattern from "I need to lose weight" to "I want to get healthy".
Remind yourself you want to feel strong and good everyday. Once you can shift that focus away from weight, you'll start to feel more positive about exercising.
You do not need to be "athletic"
I have a lot of people tell me they are not athletic. And I say, "Great, you don't need to be!".
Athletes are not born - they are made. You can improve your athletic ability, but you have to use it to improve it!
Remove the mindset that you aren't athletic and therefore can't do what others do. You can be physically active and you can do athletic activities - at any point in your life.
If you have a body, you can identify as an active person.
This mindset will help you feel more connected to exercise since it's about moving your body - not about being something you don't relate too.
Realize that the benefits are more than just looks Most of us think of exercising in terms of looking better. But the best improvements that come with exercising regularly have nothing to do with how you look.
In fact, you'll feel results before you see them!
If you move more, your body rewards you with better sleep patterns, better digestion (think less bloating!), better skin and feeling strong - just to name a few.
Your mind will reward you with higher self-esteem, positive thoughts and an overall feeling of accomplishment. These benefits will improve your quality of life and that is priceless!!
You can start to change your thought patterns and gain all the benefits of exercise as soon as you take back control of how you view exercise. It's not a punishment or a chore - it's therapy!
