When it comes to fitness, most people start with surface-level goals: “I want to lose weight,” or “I want to look good for summer.” While there’s nothing wrong with these goals, they rarely lead to long-term change. Why?

Because they don’t dig deep enough to uncover the real reasons behind your desire to change.
I’ve learned this firsthand.
My ‘why’ isn’t about hitting a number on the scale or fitting into a smaller size. My ‘why’ is my daughter. I want to be the mom who can keep up with her as she grows, hike mountains with her when I’m 60, and set an example of what it looks like to prioritize health. I’ve also watched loved ones lose their health due to choices, and I’ve seen what happens when mobility and independence are lost. That’s not the life I want for myself—or my family.
So, how do you find your deeply rooted ‘why’? It starts with reflection.
Action Steps to Find Your Why
Visualize Your Future Self
Close your eyes and picture yourself 10, 20, or even 30 years from now. What does your life look like? Are you active, strong, and healthy? Or are you struggling to move, relying on others for help? Let that vision guide you.
Ask Yourself Tough Questions
Why do I really want to change?
Who benefits from me being healthier—and who might be impacted if I don’t?
What am I willing to do to make this happen?
Write It Down
Once you’ve uncovered your ‘why,’ put it somewhere you can see it every day. Mine is written on a sticky note on my fridge: “For my daughter, for my future self.”
Revisit Your Why Regularly
Life gets busy, and it’s easy to lose focus. Make it a habit to revisit your ‘why’ during tough times.
